Weekly Tip #6: Two iPods, One Computer; Can it Be Done?(Yes, It Can!)
Posted by jkool13 on June 9, 2008
I have ahd some questions asking me to take you through a tutorial of how to have two iPods synced with one computer on one user account. This is actually very simple.
————————
Step 1: Basic Set-up
————————
- Once you have unpacked your iPod, get on your computer and download iTunes. Follow the steps of setting up iTunes(If you need help Go Here, and follow Step 2; then come back here and proceed)
- Once iTunes is set up, plug in your first iPod(USB goes into Computer; smaller, thinner end goes into iPod)
- After you plug in your iPod, follow the steps to set it up(Naming it…ect.); Remember registering it is optional
- After you have set up your first iPod, set up your second one the same way you set your first one up(Remember: Unplugging the first iPod is optional if you have 2+ USB ports; If you can, plug the second one into a different USB port and then keep the first one plugged in)
- After you have set up both iPods, gather all of your favorite CD’s in your collection so you can import them into iTunes
- Grab all of those CD’s I told you about and put one of them in.
- Click on the CD under devices and then select the songs you want in your library and on your iPod. Next, click Import CD down in the lower right corner. Wait for it to complete and then repeat this step with all the CD’s with the songs you want on either iPod.
————————
Step 2: Make It Work
————————
- Once you have set up both iPods, go into the first iPods settings by clicking it under the Devices section
- On the first screen, there should be an option that says “Manually Manage Music and Videos”
- Put a check-mark next to that option
- Click “Apply” down in the lower right hand corner
- You should get a message stating that you have to click the eject button next to the iPod(under devices) whenever you unplug it, click OK (I will talk about this later*)
- Do the same for the second iPod
————————
Step 3: How To Manage Your iPod
————————
- For each of these, the same apply’s to both iPods, 1 or 2
- To Copy Music To Your iPod: From your Music Library, drag any song to your Ipod(Under devices) that you want on your iPod.
- To Copy Videos To Your iPod: From your Music Library(for Music Videos), Movies Library(for Movies), TV Shows Library(for Tv Shows), Rentals Library(for Reted Movies- only works with newest generation excluding shuffle), just drag the Movie, Rental, Music Video or TV Show to your iPod(under devices)
- To Copy Podcasts To Your iPod: From the Pocast Library, drag and drop the Podcast or a specific episode that you want to your iPod(under devices)
- To Copy games To Your iPod: From the Games Library, drag and drop the game you want to your iPod(under devices)
- The same works for Audio Books and any other type of iTunes Library Media
- To get a song/video/podcast/game/audio book off of your iPod, click on the little arrow next to your iPod(under devices) and go to the section with the song/video/podcast/game/audio book in it that you want to delete. Once you have founf the item that you wish to delete(from your iPod only; it will remain in your iTunes Library), click on the item and then press delete on your keyboard.
- WARNING: Video does not work for iPod shuffles or iPods that do not support video; Games do not work for iPods that do not support Games
I hope this helps some of you out there. Until next time, chao!
P.S. If you find an error in this post please email me at jkool12@gmail.com- Thank You
P.S.S. This post was done with 2 iPods in mind. This can be done with up to 5 iPods, just repeat he steps for each additional iPod like you would with the second one.
*What this means is that before you unplug your iPod you must press the eject button everytime you are about to unplug your iPod. Once the iPod dissapears from the devices list, you may unplug it. WARNING: not doing this everytime you unplug it may cause damage to the device.

Someone in my family has songs that I like, but got it from a friend’s computer onto her ipod. Is there any way I can transfer the songs that are only on her ipod onto mine?
