Weekly Tip #9: How To Really Speed Up Vista Start Up

Posted by jkool13 on July 6, 2008

Welcome to this weeks Weekly Tip! This week, we will be talking about how to speed up Vista Start up! Ever since the new OS came out it has been known for its slow start up. Well, there is actually a very simple way to fix this, and I am going to show you how.

By default, Vista uses only one core of your processor to start up. However, now most computers have processors with two cores to improve performance. So, what you need to do is make Windows Vista use those 2 cores when starting up.

First, you want to click on start and search for Run at the bottom of the menu. You should see a program titled Run with a blue icon next to it, click on it. Next, when you see the window open, type msconfig and click OK. You should be asked the regular Approve or Deny thing, Approve it. Then, you will have open the system configuration utility (Don’t be afraid if it takes a minute or two to load). Now the most important thing that I am going to tell you here is to NOT DO ANYTHING unless I tell you to. Right now people, you are messing with some small flames here that could burn the whole house down, so just stay with me. if you do what I tell you to, all shall go well. Now, what you want to do is click on the Boot tab at the top of the window and then click on Advanced Options. Now, click the check box next to Number of Processors and change the number in the drop down list to 2 (Do this only if you have a Dual Core processor; if you do not have a Dual Core processor, then the number 2 will not be available in the drop down box, Instead select 1). Now, click OK then Apply then OK again. Click either Exit without restart or Restart, it doesn’t matter. Chances are, if you needed to speed up your start up time you are the kind of person who shuts down each night and loads back up in the morning anyway.

And that is it! You should now notice a bit of speed up in your Vista Start up. I found this method by digging around in the msconfig. Apparently it uses the 2 cores (or brains) of your processor to the fullest, so you may not have any room to do anything else at start up but this way, you will have room more quickly. I hope this tip helped all of you Vista users out there, for I know how badly it can be sometimes.
